campfire
by Heather Johnson

audio: read by the author
Within the deep forest
sparks a small flame,
illuminating the faces that surround me,
enveloping them in its golden gleam.
It ignites as if it contains the whole universe,
strengthened by every star
but balanced by every sea.
It languidly laces the sky with gray smoke,
delicately dancing
throughout a void of trees and grass.
What light and warmth this campfire brings
as we gather to tell stories of new and old.
This very fire will illuminate us
while we create stories
for another day.
