hidden journal
by Kylie McCarthy

Huh., a drawing by Gaby Bravo (grade 12)
The hidden journal
The secrets that are written within
The pages that are filled
The dreams that want to be remembered
The fights that are important
The dates that want to be forgotten
The friendships that are broken
The heartache that needs to be felt
The tears on the pages
The marks of the words erased
The words that want to be written but can’t be
The poor grammar
The feelings that can’t be taken back
The ones that want to be
The words that want to be shared with the world
The consequences of the feelings that feel wrong
The fear that everyone has seen them
The secrets that are written within
The hidden journal

bio
My name is Kylie McCarthy. I am a sophomore. Outside of school I am a photographer. When I am at school, I am usually at cheerleading practice or taking pictures for sports. Many people don’t know this about me, but I love to write and try to write as much as I can in my free time.
how do you resonate with your piece? why is it personal to you?
My poem is personal to me in the way that it is a very common feeling with many young women, my age, and around my age. I think one of my favorite things about this poem is how relatable it could be to so many different people and how this poem can resonate with pretty much anyone.
what message do you hope to convey through your piece?
I hope to convey the message that the feelings of this poem and the emotions of this poem are OK to be felt, and while they might feel like a bad thing at the time, we just grow from these experiences.
what is your ideal writing environment?
When writing, I find I write my best when I am lying in my bed listening to music.
