“Unbreakable Bond”
Acrylic painting by 9th grader Camila Galindo
Separated
By Isabella Chang
Once rooms echo memories of laughter,
Two lovers once intertwined now drift apart,
Fights and fights, whispers of what came after,
Separate lives, it is now just the start,
Now at the start, it was all confusing,
Forgetting something at the other house,
Caught in between, new lives were infusing,
A couple years past, mom found a new spouse,
With birthdays and holidays divided,
To weave a bond that time cannot defeat,
Our parents still fight, left two-sided,
Ten years have passed, my family feels complete,
Though their paths diverged, their love is embraced,
For in their hearts, they’ll always have a space.

Biography
My name is Isabella Chang, but you can call me Izzy, and I am a sophomore. When I am not in school, I am probably at gymnastics practice, watching my favorite show, Modern Family, or getting my nails done.
Why did you choose to submit this category(s) of artwork/writing out of the many available category options?
I chose to submit the sonnet category of writing because it takes a lot of time and effort to come up with a fine piece that follows the rules. Additionally, this poem challenged me in many ways I didn’t expect, and I love a good challenge.
What message do you hope to convey through your piece?
The message I hope to convey through this piece is even when families change, love doesn’t disappear. While having divorced parents can be painful, time can bring healing, new beginnings, and a sense of completeness in unexpected ways.
