Shining

Moonlight, a painting by Edvard Munch

By Cruz Albert

Another melancholic night
I search for serenity by the ocean’s bay,
a place that is usually teemed with people
is left abandoned in the evening.

I turn to the sky, but on this particular night
The stars refuse to paint it.
The only current soul, although alone,
is the moon.

Even on the lonliest of nights,
the moon continues to shine
as if unbothered by the absence.

Even in the presence of war
the moon continues to shine,
as if it has not seen the hostility of man
although I know it has,
for it has seen this earth longer than me.

The moon continues to shine,
despite being in the shadow of the extraordinary sun.
It knows it will never come close in comparison,
yet it never stops glittering.

The moon will never be covered by a cloud,
nor will it ever be unseen by a human eye.
It works tirelessly throughout the day,
nevertheless it will remain unnoticed.

Only recognized when in comparison to the great star in the sky,
the knowledge of continuously coming second best
would usually darken a persons’ soul,
however the moon’s light will continue to glow.

As I continue to walk down the shoreline,
I again take notice of the refractions of light
bouncing off the tranquil waves.

In my opinion,
the moon will always shine bigger and brighter                  than the sun ever will.
