EXPRESSIONS

Sixty Seconds

by Tristan Artanis

Mistake, a drawing by Cleo Cruz Nogueira (grade 11)

I lie in bed,

Taking a breath,

Until it stops.

Taking my time,

For the last minute

Of my life.

Finally, this painful life,

Will halt in a soft bed

For this last minute,

I will take my breaths,

And let time

Slowly stop.

Why am I happy about this stop?

Have I not cherished life?

Should there be sorrow at this time?

I turn in my bed

And a tear falls with my breath

Halfway through the minute.

In this minute,

My mind will not stop.

I take a quick breath.

I think, “I lived a great life!”

I try to bury my thoughts into the pillow of my bed.

I wonder, “Is this my time?”

Yes, this is my time.

This is my final minute.

I smile in my bed.

The pain will stop,

And my wondrous life…

Will conclude on one final breath.

This is my last breath.

The end of my time.

I’ve had an amazing life.

I’ve loved every minute.

And my love won’t stop,

Lying peacefully, in my bed.

Take a breath.

Count the minutes.

This is your time.

Don’t make it stop.

Live your life.

The world is your bed.
