EXPRESSIONS

Every year, in addition to our literary fair issue, Expressions magazine publishes a themed issue featuring student work submitted through our website.

The Expressions student staff reviews submissions for poetry, prose, nonfiction, and art created by students at American Heritage School.

Contributors to our 2022 themed issue are encouraged to explore the theme of maze.

“We navigate through life as if through a maze. We don’t know when we will face an obstacle or if an end truly exists.”

Please read the submission guidelines below carefully before submitting:

We review works on the basis of originality and technical ability. Expressions seeks to publish art and writing that is unique and electric—work that challenges the boundaries of language and convention.

For writing: Please copy and paste your work into the submission form. Do not email us your work. Check formatting before submitting to ensure that spaces/formatting is preserved.

For art and photography: Email a jpg or png of your work to expressions@ahschool.com. Please write “[Submission] Name of Piece” in the subject line of your email.

Writing written in languages other than English are welcome, including English poetry that weaves other languages. We ask however that writing written entirely in another language be submitted alongside a translation into English.

Submissions are reviewed blindly, without knowledge of the student’s name, gender, age, or ethnicity. Please do not submit written works with any identifying information except where indicated in the submission form. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered.

We are currently reviewing submissions from February 17, 2022 to September 12, 2022.

We do not accept simultaneous submissions. We will not review work that has been previously published elsewhere, that has placed in the school literary fair, that will be submitted to the upcoming literary fair, or that has already been submitted through this form.

We will let you know our decision on your submission within 6 weeks (usually sooner). Please do not contact us on the status of your submission unless you have not heard from us in two months. The Expressions staff reserves the right to rescind any acceptances of pieces, edit pieces, and/or place pieces in a later issue.
